Square Inc. also accepts offline debit [credit] and credit cards on their iOS or Android smartphone or tablet computer.
The application software (“app”) card switches cards through a jack-connected class reader, helps to insert card details manually by inserting or tapping the card using Bluetooth connected-connected square chip and contactless reader. On the iPad version of the Square Register app, the interface looks like a traditional cash register(Square Customer Service).
Square was the first product released by Reader Square and used to accept credit card payments by connecting it to the mobile device’s audio jack. In the original reader of Square, a simple readable head was inserted directly into 3.5mm audio jack, through which encrypted analogue card feeds from smartphones for amplification and digitisation.
Square Technology
Square Technology Payment Card is compatible with Industry Data Protection Standard (PCI) and VeriSine is certified.
In April 2011, the rival payment company Verizon claimed that the squire system at that time was unsafe, and “proper-skilled” programmers could write a replacement app that would use a square device to skip credit cards and return the details. Because the first generation Square Reader did not encrypt track data in the hardware,
VeriFone posted a display video and sample skimming app on its website. Dorsey called Verizon’s claim “neutral and accurate”, stating that card data can be collected from the card-view, and it is said that the card rejects the fraud protection provided by the issuer.
Square now uses strong encryption on its devices, which include SSL and PGP, its cryptographic keys are at least 2048 bits in length, card numbers, magnetic stripe data, or security codes are not stored on Square Client Device. The squad adheres to guidelines issued by OWASP.
In July 2014, Square announced a card reader which will accept the Chip Card and Contact Card before the October 2015 EMV liability shift.
This new reader supports chip and signature and contactless transactions and the standard class reader are also provided to support standard magnetic strip card transactions(Square Customer Service).
At the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference in June 2015, Apple announced that Square will release a new Square Reader capable of accepting Apple Pay and other contactless payments. Readers will also be able to accept EMV chip cards.
